He is also the European representative (at-large member) on the International Committee of the American Society for Chairman (2002-2005) of the Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology Division of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS). Since July 2005 he is the President of IUMS.Moreover, he is corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Veterinary Sciences in Madrid (Spain, since 1984) and of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen (since 1987) and full member of the American Academy of Microbiology since 1995.
In 1995 he received the Körber Award for European Scientific Research, in 1997 the annual award of the Society for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine, in 2001 the Ferdinand-Cohn-Medal and in 2009 the Lwoff Award of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies as well as the Bergey Medal. He is currently Executive Editor of Systematics and Applied Microbiology. He was one of the Coeditors of the second edition of "The Prokaryotes" and is coeditor of the new electronic edition of Prokaryotes and of Volume 3 of  the second edition of Bergey’s Manul of Systematic Bacteriology. He retired at the end of March 2007 and is since June 2007 TUM Emeritus of Excellence.
